Music and the Deaf

Every year we try to commit to helping two charities.  This year we supported the Teenage Cancer Trust and Music and the Deaf.

Most recently we worked with Music and the Deaf.  Music and the Deaf helps people with hearing loss to continue to experience music.  The charity has set up music clubs throughout the country and offers people the chance to learn a musical instrument or take part in signed song by joining a signing choir.  Music and the Deaf is supported by Sir Richard Stilgoe.  In October they re-launched their new logo and opened up their new offices at Eureka.  We were so pleased to be approached by them to provide their cake for the launch.

We wanted our cake to capture what it is Music and the Deaf do, so we wanted our cake to be extremely visual with the piano keys spiralling around the cake and the music bursting out of the top, the spirals represented the sign for sing and then we included notes and incorporated the new logo.

It was an absolute pleasure to provide a cake for such an important charity.  More information about Music and the Deaf can be found here:

Martha's Wedding

We've had a fun week making a wedding cake for Martha Greengrass and her partner Andy this week.  Martha asked us to create a stack of books made out of cake for her book themed wedding. We love our books at Kiss Me Cake so we were very excited about this one and have been planning it for quite a while.

This cake was an absolute pleasure to create.  Martha provided us with a recipe for a whiskey filled fruit cake, which was absolutely divine!  We were given a list of Martha and Andy's favourite books and then we got creative.  It was hard work often working long in to the evening and carefully painting the books in edible ink with a steady hand.  At Martha's request we decorated the cake board with a crossword design and painted the squares with black food colouring, trying to keep each line straight...which wasn't easy given our soundtrack for the evening was 'Flight of the Concords.'

We were really pleased to learn that Martha and Andy loved their cake and were so pleased that we could be a part of their special day by providing them with a very special cake.

Congratulations and Best Wishes to the happy couple xx

Wedding Season

We've been very naughty we know.  Not updating our blog is a terrible thing...but if you follow us on Facebook you will see why!  We've been caught up in wedding season.

Since we attended the wedding fair at Wentworth we have been inundated with orders and we've had so much fun turning our customers designs and dreams in to cake.  It's been an incredible year and we have loved every minute.  Wedding season is by no means over though...we're now heading in to winter wedding season and we can't wait!

So here are just a few of our favourite wedding creations.  We have lots of exciting things coming up over the next few months and we promise now we are getting in to the routine we will keep you updated.

Introducing Kiss Me Cake - Wentworth Wedding Fair

Yesterday we attended yet another fantastic event thanks to the brilliant organising skills of the people at the Rotherham Advertiser. So far, it has to be our favourite venue...it's just so beautiful!

This year we re-designed the look of our stand and took everything we possibly could with us. We wanted to really get our brand out there and capture our vintage theme, which we think we managed to do. Our new uniforms certainly drew some attention and plenty of compliments and we had so much fun meeting potential customers and chatting with some of the people we are already working with. Chatting to the visitors was really interesting, we met one inspirational bride who is taking on the mammoth task of creating her own wedding cake, instead of a traditional tiered cake this bride is creating individual cakes for her guests to eat as dessert. A fantastic idea for a bride on a budget...but even better she is ingeniously baking her cakes in mushy pea cans. We love this! They make the perfect individual cake and you don't have to hire any tins. Fabulous!

To prepare for our day, we spent all of our spare time creating some new cakes and baking and decorating 100 cupcakes with piped roses. It was all worth it as we were really happy with our new look and it seemed our potential customers were also!

Here are a few pictures of our day and to introduce you to our new look, we'd love to get your feedback so please leave us some comments and perhaps we will see you at our next event!

Don't worry, be happy...there's cake!

We are afraid that it is official as we are declaring it, there is always time for cake. And doesn't it make you feel better? Yesterday we handed out 100 cupcakes to some hard-working people, everyone accepted one and every person took it with a smile on their face, you see cake makes us happy!

Here's a lovely bit of carrot cake that we whipped up for a birthday recently...and how brilliant it is too as it's got one of your five-a-day in it! We always said cake was good for you didn't we? We also believe that baking a cake can make you feel happy too...have a look at one of our favourite books "Saved by Cake" proof that baking really can banish the blues. This book is full of quirky recipes with some interesting flavours too who knew coca cola was delicious in a cake or even beetroot!

No longer do we worry about the calories, if it brings a smile to your face then it's worth having. Even better if you whip a cake up yourself you can burn a whole load of calories that justify eating it! Did you know that squatting in front of the oven can burn between 200-300 calories? And you can burn up to 100 calories just from rolling pastry? We found this amazing article "Great British Bake Off: The Workout" on the Radio Times website...we're so impressed we're thinking of putting this article on the kitchen wall!

From now we shouldn't pass on cake as we've found some health benefits right here, it makes us happy and we can burn calories whilst making it and after doing a bit of googling we can burn 29 calories eating it! Woo hoo...happy cake days everybody!

January

Can you believe that we are already in February? It's a short month too so before we all know it we will be in March. 2014 seems to have got off to a busy start in the bakery. After our Wizard of Oz cake at the beginning of the month, we were straight in to baking and creating for our busiest weekend yet (and most stressful). We were commissioned to create a Mike the Knight Castle complete with Mike and a Dragon. At the same time we were also asked to make a delicious raspberry and almond birthday cake to celebrate a special 40th birthday. All of this needed to be completed and delivered the same weekend!

We don't mind a bit of pressure and a looming deadline always makes us work that little bit quicker, but when Phoebe developed excruciating toothache we weren't sure if we would make it on time. So, with some helpers on standby (just in case) Phoebe headed off on an emergency trip to the Dentist. A whole lot of pain killers later we made it...without helpers and with Phoebe feeling slightly away with the fairies, la la laaa! Phew!

Proud of our efforts and with Phoebe making a recovery we've now been able to take a deep breath and have a look at the year ahead, which is looking very exciting so far...have a look for yourself!

  • We are now proud members of the Sugarcraft Guild, our membership was accepted just a few weeks a go and is a stamp of quality on our business.
  • Just confirmed is our attendance at Wentworth Woodhouse Wedding Fair on the 16th March. If you didn't make it last time you must pay us a visit at this absolutely stunning venue.
  • Our tickets are booked for this years' Cake and Bake Show. We're ready to research some of the newest designs in sugar craft, pick up some new tools and heckle Paul Hollywood!
  • We're finishing off the designs for some of the fantastic wedding cakes we have been commissioned to create this year...it's getting very exciting!
  • More events are being added to the list...watch this space for confirmation of where we will be.
  • Our website will finally launch this year, packed full of pictures, information, recipes and an easy way to place your orders!

Hope your year is going well so far...keep reading our posts for all things cake, "You Dream It, We Bake It!"

Back in Business 2014!

After a busy Christmas we've made it in to 2014! It was so nice to take a little break from the kitchen and relax. After the last cake was delivered on Christmas Eve, we could each return to our homes, put our feet up and indulge in the festivities.

But as soon as New Year arrived we were straight back in to the kitchen to create our first cake of the year, a Wizard of Oz cake. This was a special cake we created for Tabitha who was celebrating her 6th birthday. It needed lots of glitter and a special vanilla, rainbow sponge inside. We really had fun creating this cake and hope that Tabitha had a fantastic day and enjoyed her cake.

2014 is shaping up to be one of our busiest years and we are really excited to be helping people create their dream cakes. We will be out and about this year and hope to see you at some of the great events taking place. Don't forget if you're looking to surprise somebody this year or need that perfect cake for your own special day "You Dream It, We'll Bake It!"

Forget the diet...treat yourself to some Kiss Me Cake cake...cake makes everything better!
